Meet the Principal

Lauralee Veenstra is Elementary School Principal at Denver Christian School

“This is such an exciting time for our school, and I feel so blessed to be able to be part of continuing the tradition of educational excellence for Christian families.  I know, first hand, the amazing things that happen in our classrooms on a daily basis. The DC elementary experience is truly special. Our faculty and staff are focused on equipping our students with the skills to thrive at each grade level academically, socially, spiritually, artistically, athletically and beyond.”– Lauralee Veenstra, Elementary Principal

Founded in 1916, the Denver Christian School tradition of educational excellence has always been based on the idea of being forward-thinking and meeting the needs of the times. Today, our elementary school program serves children in kindergarten through fifth grades.

At Denver Christian, we are focused on cultivating the talents of each individual student so that they can grow, develop, and flourish in recognition of the talents that God has chosen for him or her. DC elementary students are encouraged to develop a love of learning as they develop basic skills for a lifetime of education. We instill this as part of the elementary student core competencies. Our K-5 teachers provide an environment where children feel safe, loved and respected.

Denver Christian’s elementary program emphases in kindergarten through fifth grades are reading and math. Our reading program grounds children’s early reading skills in a strong phonics base, helps children develop excellent word attack capabilities, and invites children to enjoy reading. DC students develop reading fluency and competence through a strong literature program in the upper elementary grades. Spelling and writing complement reading instruction to round out the language arts program. Our students even have an opportunity to participate in the ACSI District Spelling Bee..

The Elementary math program equips students with a strong foundation of math facts whiledeveloping problem-solving skills and a full understanding of math concepts. Students use manipulatives, Reflex Math, Khan Academy, and other resources to enrich the math curriculum. Our students understand how numbers work, build logic and problem-solving skills and develop age-appropriate computation confidence and fluency.

DC students in grades K-5 also study science, social studies, and Bible. The Elementary Bible curriculum is solid in theology and Bible instruction. It was developed to ensure a strong and lasting connection with students. The goal is to equip students with the knowledge they need to understand and believe God’s word, and to reflect that relationship and faith in their daily interactions.

Technology is infused throughout the curriculum. Our teachers leverage promethean boards in the classroom to engage students in collaborative, interactive learning sessions. Frequent visits to the computer lab help children learn to use these important tools to enhance their exploration of God’s world.

Elementary students enjoy art, music, and library, each week. Denver Christian’s library system is an information center that provides students access to more than 23,000 volumes and equips them with the resources and skills necessary to become effective users of ideas and information.

In music, third graders learn to play recorders, while fifth graders having the opportunity to choose an instrument and join the school band. Student work is showcased through art festivals, elementary performances, choir and band programs.

Athletics and Physical Education

The Elementary physical education program celebrates movement and its importance in the learning process. Students are given the opportunity to learn teamwork, athletic skills, and an appreciation for lifelong fitness. The school year culminates with an elementary field day on our new athletic fields.
